On the Historical Background of Mulan

Hua Mulan (4 12 -502), a native of Yucheng (now Yucheng County, Shangqiu City, Henan Province) in the Northern Wei Dynasty, was a heroine. Hua Mulan's deeds have been passed down to this day. She was a national hero in ancient China, loyal and filial, and famous for defeating the invading nation for her father. The emperor of the Tang Dynasty posthumously awarded her the title of "General Filial Piety".

Mulan's surname, native place, etc. There is no record in the history books, so the dispute between Mulan has always existed throughout the ages. It is understood that Henan people say she is from Yucheng County, Shangqiu, Shaanxi people say she is from Yan 'an, Hubei people say she is from Huangpi, Anhui people say she is from Bozhou, Jiangsu people say she is from Taizhou, Inner Mongolia people say she is from Lesheng (now Hohhot and Linger) and Baotou, and Hebei people say she is from Wanxian. There are different opinions about the legend of Mulan's hometown.

Where is Mulan's hometown? There has been a debate in history. Xu Peng pointed out in 1962 Mulan Poem published in the No.97 issue of Selected Works of China: "About Mulan's surname and native place ... some people say that she is from Qiaoxian, some people say that she is from Songzhou, some people say that she is from Huangzhou, and some people say that she is from Shangqiu." According to historical records, Qiao Jun, Songzhou and Shangqiu all refer to Zhuang Xiaowei in Zhouzhuang Village, Yingkuo Town, Yucheng County, Henan Province.
