Tell me about your experience from non-schoolmaster to schoolmaster?

I think everyone's road to transformation is really touching, and the span from "non-schoolmaster to schoolmaster" is large enough. Me too. I failed English in high school. After that, I got full marks in TOEFL speaking and GMAT writing. I worked as a TOEFL oral teacher in Beijing New Oriental (as you probably know), and studied MBA in Tsinghua and MIT. There are pictures and prototypes:

After that, I'm not going to deal with it in this article. I just want to use this topic to write How I Learn English Well, and share my "counterattack" process from a non-schoolmaster (even scum) to a so-called schoolmaster. This is not only a reflection on myself, but more importantly, the experience I believe will definitely benefit everyone for a long time. After all, I was as weak and confused as you, and I wanted everyone to experience the pleasure of "fighting back".

Permission: All the appearances and opinions in this article are not exaggerated or mysterious, and all the contents are my real experience and heartfelt sharing.

Clarification: This paper focuses on TOEFL, but the essentials and experience of English learning are absolutely applicable to all friends who want to improve their English, and almost all English preparation with detailed scores as the goal.

Introduction: After reading this article, practice a small goal with the essentials shared below. For example, if you take part in an English speech contest and make a speech in English, you will probably get an ideal score in TOEFL. Because at the end of each paragraph, the city has given a quantitative and operational detailed essentials. Believe me, this article will enable you to achieve goals you never dreamed of before.

So, if I were you, I would definitely read it.

First of all, my high school English is really unqualified (so is junior high school and primary school). What's your opinion? That is, papers with a full score of 100, I usually have a score of more than 50 and a full score of 120, and I usually have a very high score of 67. I clearly remember one exam with a perfect score of 100. To encourage me, the teacher changed my grade from 59 to 60. These pictures are unforgettable in the early morning. It's a pity that I didn't leave an unqualified paper at that time as proof that I had a prototype in the morning. Although this is understandable, failure is not a glorious thing after all. After all, there was no smartphone to take pictures at that time.

Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT)

My "counterattack" started from the third year of high school, or rather, from the summer vacation after the second year of high school. There are several key nodes in the process. Let me summarize it first, and then show the forms in detail one by one on the back. Several key nodes are: 1. I met a teacher with strong English skills, stronger teaching skills and charming moral character in off the charts. 2. I found myself with extraordinary talent in imitating English pronunciation, and attached to this skill, I quickly became arrogant (which made me really fall in love with learning English); 3. I found a lot of English materials and contents (speeches, texts, movies) that I am interested in, recited them and applied them.

The simple summary is: 1, find a good teacher; 2. Create comparative advantage and arrogance as soon as possible; 3, interested in the content itself, and recite a lot.

Ok, now, you and I will talk one by one.

1. Find an excellent teacher and make him/her a role model.

This is crucial. Because a good and attractive teacher (the two must be combined) directly determines whether you can learn the most accurate essentials, and also greatly determines whether you love learning.

Take myself as an example. I wanted to learn English well from the summer vacation of my sophomore year, but my goal at that time was to improve my exam results and get into a better university. However, the process of hope is not smooth. I thought at that time, first, what the school teacher said was very unsystematic, and there was no same theory of essentials that could systematically link the preparation points of the English test in senior high school and completely surround them. When I meet a new topic, I always talk about a new knowledge point, which is extremely deadly and always makes me feel that I can't finish learning. Second, you and the English teacher in my class are really hard to listen to. To put it bluntly, the speech is unattractive and unattractive. Naturally, you and I can only force ourselves to listen carefully, but this meticulous power is easily tenable (as all my students who have taken the TOEFL oral test know, this is the "active attention" mentioned in the TOEFL oral test).

However, luck is so magical. One day, my mother went to help me listen to the introduction of a training school. The speaker is Mr. Zang, the headmaster of the training school. Although he is not very old, everyone calls him "Lao Zang" (in order to avoid suspicion, I didn't disclose the name of the school and the full name of the teacher, only my family name, and happiness is a sign of respect). My mother came back and said that this teacher is really good. I understand everything. People are still humorous. Why don't you try? I didn't think much about my college entrance examination scores at that time, so I asked my mother to sign me up.

I was particularly surprised in class. The two-story hall was crowded with people. I sat on the second floor of the hall, and the speaker was Lao Zang. Contrary to the old practice, the first class was about writing (usually called composition at that time). What you say is understanding, and that's incitement. Then talk about single choice, completion type, reading, straight to the point, and every sentence is in place. Throw two jokes from time to time, make fun of high school teaching from time to time, and then recite an English speech to you and me from time to time. At that time, I thought the teacher's speech was fucking clear, his pronunciation was fucking good, and his jokes were fucking burning!

According to clear teaching and systematic essentials, what's more, because I hardly learned anything before the second year of high school and was not hindered by any wrong essentials and customs, I directly enlightened my mind, split my mind and absorbed accurate essentials without any loss. After half a year, by the time of the fifth mock exam, the teacher counted the number of wrong questions in the reading comprehension of the same inkstone in the whole class, from more to less, and at the end of the question, he said, "Which inkstone is only wrong?" I didn't raise my hand when I saw that no one raised his hand in the hall, but I was right. At that time, I knew that my college entrance examination English was not much different.

In my subsequent study and teaching process, I also recalled and reviewed this teacher's essential core many times. Summarize and share with you:

1, recite only the core words, don't be greedy, there were 2500 in the college entrance examination at that time;

2. According to the main points of reading and understanding, sort out a set of standardized methods suitable for all topics;

3. We must pay attention to the expansibility of writing templates and the diversity of words, rather than a rough recitation (this is as practical as oral English);

4. Moral charm, overwhelming incitement and encouragement, makes students fall in love with learning, making it easier to confront each other (most teachers don't).

I clearly remember that in the last class, as the final exam, Lao Zang gave you twelve words: stay ahead, go all out and have no regrets.

Looking down, there is a photo of old Zang.

I was impressed, and I remembered the detailed explanation clearly. Lao Zang said that the college entrance examination next month, everyone will be liberated immediately, so he called to stay in front. You and I have been happy for so long, no matter what, in the end, you and I will give everything, even if we don't leave regrets, so we will try our best. Finally, in any case, the road of life is still long, and the college entrance examination is only one stop. As long as you and I have been happy and fought, you will be worthy of yourself. So called, Fanghua has no regrets.

I thought at that time, these twelve words are really fucking awesome!

PS: Looking at this sentence now, it really feels more burning than the sentence "I've been here, I played, and I don't care about the result" in The Story of Wukong.

I don't do anything to read Wukong's story. In addition to selfies ...

In the end, my English score in the college entrance examination was 142.

The charm of a teacher determines and influences not only a subject, but also a lifetime. At that time, when Lao Zang was giving lectures, he would hear some "stories" from time to time. I think it's especially refreshing to hear his appearance, such as rushing to class every day, eating in the car, writing lesson plans all night and so on. That is, from that time on, I had a new understanding of what "handsome" is. Although the old man himself is very handsome, he is really more attractive than Yan value. That is, from that time on, I fell in love with English and began to feel that teaching English well was a very attractive thing. I began to dream of standing on the podium like him one day and began to be happy for this goal.

Lao Cang Ben Zun

Freshman, won the prize in the world speech contest; When I was a sophomore, I passed TOEFL /GMAT/BEC/ College Oral English Test/CET-4 and CET-6, and I was deeply attracted by the vitality of New Oriental. Junior year, part-time TOEFL teacher in New Oriental, won the second prize in the world competition; After graduating from my senior year, I gave up going abroad and became a full-time teacher of New Oriental, and I got a good teacher of New Oriental Group (which should be the youngest in history). I really believe that all my wishes have come true. The happier I am, the more honored I am. Almost every year, an ancestor who has a deep influence on me and has great financial support appears in the city as a mentor and friend to help me grow up faster.

At that time, I kind of killed Matt. ...

Together, I am really full of thanks. In my last class in New Oriental, I typed the names of people who encouraged me on the slide to show my gratitude. Although the names here are all from New Oriental, I will never forget the profound influence of Lao Zang on me. Because, the starting point of all this is because I wanted to be him. This is the first point I want to make. I must be very happy to find such a good and NB teacher.

I wrote all these people in the photo. In order to show modesty and respect, I didn't add myself, although I thought I could.

Detailed essentials: Use people around you, network information and even media information to find a truly free, meaningful and attractive teacher, and be willing to get to know him/her and learn from him/her. In this world, there are very few teachers who have the ability to "touch the stone into gold". However, as long as you look hard, you will find it.

2. Find the strongest gene, quickly create "comparative advantage" and form "absolute arrogance"

What does this sentence mean? Teacher Gao once said: "When I grow up like this, I have to study hard, write songs well, be a director well and do talk shows well. This is my strongest gene. You said I really wanted to be an actor. Isn't that screwing around? You make people like Daniel Wu, Chun Wu and Takeshi Kaneshiro. Why do you want to go? " I think this statement is quite reasonable, just as it is true that people with 1.75 meters can enter the NBA, but you and I must not encourage all people with 1.75 meters to play happily in the NBA. This is a lie. You and I will definitely find our strongest 1% gene on the road of self-upgrading and work hard in this direction. Only in this way can we create arrogance as soon as possible, make ourselves more enjoyable and easier to fight.

For example, on the way to learn English, my vocabulary is not the largest, my grammar knowledge is not the most practical, and even my knowledge of British and American literature is not as good as that of English majors (I am a finance major). However, coincidentally, I realized that I was "superior" and my invention was good at imitation. The direct result is that I imitate the pronunciation, which sounds good. I haven't learned phonetic symbols, and I can't even write all English phonetic symbols in the morning. I think it's useless to transcribe the phonetic symbols and visualize them. I imitate the pronunciation of new words directly in the morning, which is essentially the imitation of sound, not the imitation of marked images. Therefore, pronunciation has gradually become my advantage over others. When others hear that your pronunciation is good, at least better than his/her own, you will probably be sure and arrogant. Being affirmed and arrogant is one of the nervous driving forces in most happiness processes, except love. After all, it is difficult for most people to run on a road that will never see the result.

So, what if someone says my pronunciation is not good? I want to say, it doesn't matter if the pronunciation is not good! It is ok to have a large number of words. Mr. Yu eats like this all over the world. After all, Yu's pronunciation can't be better than yours. Probably, it is ok to love reading and have a wide range of knowledge. Too many. The significance of creating "comparative advantage" is not to say that you are born with an advantage, but to find a point that is getting better and better than yourself as the focus of its rapid cut. In this way, talent soon produced its own preferences and arrogance.

Detailed essentials: carefully consider yourself, which point is the best. The winners of some speech contests have a strong regional accent, but they can also win the honor of the contest because of their unique and profound opinions. Therefore, even if pronunciation is not perfect, it is not a topic at all (indeed, any oral English test never focuses on pronunciation, but on the content itself). Find what you are best at and exert yourself.

Be sure to be interested in the content itself, turn English into a carrier or something, and recite as much as possible.

Finally, I want to talk to Lao Zang. The first English speech I heard on the spot in my life was that Lao Zang recited President Lincoln's Gettysburg address to the students in the plenary session. Although I didn't understand it at that time, I really felt very unusual, and I felt the charm of English speech for the first time.

Lincoln Gettysburg Address

PS: The full text of Gettysburg's speech is attached at the end of the article.

Since then, I've been thinking that I will recite some English speeches that I really like, not just to choose the right topic and get high marks. After I went to college, the first English speech I recited was Steve Jobs' graduation speech at Stanford University, which was very impressive at that time. Even in the morning, no matter how busy I am starting a business, I will still find some pen and ink that I am crazy about memorizing. Among them, it is probably the dialogue of the movie, the lyrics of the opera and the notes of the speech.

Recently, I am crazy about the lyrics of the opera alexander hamilton and President Roosevelt's speech.

Broadway Opera House-alexander hamilton

President Roosevelt's speech-the people of the Republic of China

So, how does the custom prototype of reciting affect the real oral expression? Let's talk about theory first. In essence, the output of spoken English is based on the input learning of this foreign language. How else do you and I know what to say and how to say it? Learning mother tongue really begins with reciting. The first word that you and I recite is probably "Mom and Dad". It is theoretically untenable to want to output without clear input. Because you don't know exactly what this word is called, and you don't know how these words are connected together. So there must be input before output. This is the necessity of reciting.

Recitation does affect the process in the detailed scene where you and I talk: before reciting the positive corpus, temporarily give up the extravagant hope of being able to express freely (because it is unscientific in itself), and recite part of the content first, and this process of resisting recitation requires you to find as much content as possible that you like and are interested in. Because confrontation itself depends on love. After reciting, in the process of each speech, even if you "forcibly" participate in the scene you are speaking now (which is actually the same as TOEFL's "transfer"), you don't have to worry too much about being inconsistent with the current context. If you really can't, you can take the initiative to pull people into the chat content that you are good at saying (reciting). This step is very tense, and you will experience unprecedented fluency of expression and linearity of large output. Of course, the other person will also praise your expressive ability. If you don't believe me, you should take the time to look into each other's eyes carefully. After that, you and I can actively adapt the content of reciting to the scene of our own speech, and then (based on more reciting), you and I will gradually begin to have "original" expressions. And this process is the process of turning what you recite into what you say.

Generally speaking, don't say anything, say something with your heart, say something with your heart, and then say something with your heart. In my opinion, this is the only way for all English learners to change from white to be able to express their own state.

Speaking of which, it is these three points:

1, find a good teacher;

2. Create comparative advantage and arrogance as soon as possible;

3, interested in the content itself, and recite a lot.

Finally, repeat the actual operation based on these three points:

1, make good use of all the channels around you and find a good teacher. If you really can't find it, just piece it together with me.

2, to trust, the so-called "comparative advantage", everyone is different, but certainly everyone has it. If you look patiently and carefully, you will find it. In this process, if necessary, I am happy to help you.

About reciting and inputting, it really doesn't lie in much, but in reciting a paragraph, a group of dialogues and a speech skillfully and accurately. For example, a song by your favorite singer, a movie by your favorite movie star, or an article by your favorite writer, as long as you get one first, it will be a great success. On the other hand, you have seen so many Hollywood movies, have you ever recited one of them? I can seriously say that as long as you carry a subordinate, there will be no expression in any life scene that you can't say. Try it if you don't believe me ~

Finally, students will probably think that this article is not enough for TOEFL. what can I say? I just want to write some essentials of oral English learning, so that more people can benefit for a long time. At the same time, in the near future, you and I will update the most comprehensive TOEFL oral preparation experience long post in history. I promise, it's earth-shaking.

More dry goods, attention column: TOEFL speaking

Wait, watch everyone, live.

Attachment-Full text of Lincoln's Gettysburg address:

Eighty years ago, our fathers thought of this continent, a country, a concept of freedom, and an idea of equality.

Now, we are engaged in a great civil war to test whether a country, or any country, can last. We are a great battlefield. We have Cometodicateiaportionofthatfield, as those who have given them livesthattnationalization lift. ITALS together fitting and properties, what should we do.

But, to a great extent, we can't dedicate-we can't dedicate-we can't allow-this land. The martyrs who struggled here, living and dead, had sacred beliefs and surpassed the power of poverty. The world will no longer remember what we said here, but it can forget what they did here. More precisely, we live to devote ourselves to the unfinished work they are trying to promote. This is our greatest wish and our greatest wish, that is, under the protection of God, we will have a new free country, a people's government, a people's government, a people's government.
