The Big Dipper is the most active star among the known circulating nova. Usually it is a dark star, with a brightness of 14. Compass alpha star (named "Tiangou V" in Chinese), apparent magnitude 3.68, distance 1300 light years. It is a blue-and-white giant of B1.5 Ⅲ Ⅲ type. Compass beta (named "Tiangou IV" in Chinese) is a yellow sub-giant planet with an apparent magnitude of 3.97 and a distance of 180 light years. Compass γ (Chinese name "Tiangou Six") is a K3Ⅲ red giant with an apparent magnitude of 4.0 1 and a distance of 99 light years.
