Which planet is the lightest?

On August 25th, a research team led by Dr. McMeyer of the Geneva Observatory in Switzerland reported that the lightest and smallest planet has been found outside the solar system so far. The mass of this planet is 14 times that of the earth. It revolves around a star named Mueri, which is very similar to the sun. This star is located in the constellation Tiantan, 50 light-years away from the earth. When night falls, we can see the star from the southern hemisphere. The revolution time of the newly discovered planet is only 9.5 days. Researchers say it may be a rocky planet with a very thin atmosphere, just like a "super earth". But unlike the earth, the surface temperature of this planet is very high during the day, reaching more than 600 degrees Celsius, so it is almost impossible for life to exist. Nevertheless, this discovery is still a great progress in science and technology, because scientists have never found such a small planet near a star outside our solar system before.

After three years of observation, the team led by Geoffrey W. Marcy (University of California, Berkeley) and R. Paul Butler (California Institute of Technology) announced the discovery of a new type of exoplanet.

Gliese 876d is a member of the dim red dwarf family, which is 0/5 light-years away from Aquarius/Kloc-,about 3.2 million kilometers away from its parent star, and its orbital period is only 46 hours. At the same time, it is also the lightest exoplanet found in ordinary star systems, with only six to nine times the mass of the earth, and its characteristics are very different from those of known exoplanets.

Marcy and Butler's team have discovered 107 exoplanets, but Gliese 876d is the most interesting one.

Because it is very close to the parent star, the diameter of the sun seen on the planet is 12 degrees, which is 24 times that seen on the earth, and the temperature is as high as 200 ~ 400℃. On the earth, liquid water is impossible to exist at this temperature, but if there is enough atmospheric pressure, it may still exist, but astronomers are not sure whether it has an atmosphere, so it may be filled with rocks like the earth and Venus. If the planet is made of rocks, its diameter is estimated to be about 1.75 times that of the earth, and its surface gravity will be 2.5 times that of the earth, so the terrain is flatter than the earth.

Like most exoplanets, Gliese 876d was discovered by radial velocity method. However, 876d is not the first planet discovered by this tenth-order red dwarf. Two heavier planets have been found before, the mass of which is 2.5 times and 0.8 times that of Jupiter (or 800 times and 250 times that of Earth), and that of period of revolution is 60 days and 30 days respectively. It is not difficult to see that they are locked at 2: 0. Astronomers use this small change between perfect vibrations to find out the hidden interference source: Gliese 876d.
