The Bryansk Front regularly supplies the guerrillas with weapons and food. But once a telegram came from the guerrilla headquarters: "We will take guns and ammunition from the enemy, but songs cannot be captured like trophies. Please send a song. "

Headquarters forwarded the telegram to Katz and the poet Thorpe Lonov.

1942 On the eve of the October Revolution, Katz and sophron Novo (he was a military reporter of Izvestia at that time) and others came to the Red Army headquarters in Bryansk, Tula Efrimov, to prepare a performance commemorating the 25th anniversary of the October Revolution. In the headquarters, a lieutenant general and deputy commander mentioned guerrilla songs to them.

As early as 1937, Katz and sophron Novo co-wrote an uninhibited Cossack song "By the Old Oak", which was well-known. Later, they wrote many songs together: queue songs, lyric songs, marches and folk songs, but they never wrote guerrilla songs. Katz later wrote: "What is the guerrilla song like? Guerrillas don't March in procession. They don't need a parade. Waltz? You can't dance in the dense forest surrounded by the enemy. We have also imagined other things-solemn, festive, and sung during the dinner, all of which are inappropriate. Later, I remembered an old folk song "Ermak": "Rainstorms and strong winds are roaring ..." There is also a long-forgotten song about the 18 12 war (Russia resisted Napoleon's invasion), so snow-covered forests, guerrilla caves, smoke from bonfires, and those sitting by bonfires, carrying their backs before setting out for combat missions. In this way, later song titles and original poems and songs were born. "

"The Whistling of Bryansk Forest" was accepted by the front headquarters and was originally scheduled for1October 7 165438+ Red Army home performance. But165438+On June 6th, composer Katz received an order to coach the first-line song and dance troupe; As a military journalist, Thorpe Lonov was told to fly over the front line to the guerrilla camp immediately. This song goes well with him. The planes crossing the front line are small planes that are not easy to be found by the enemy. Except for the pilot, there is only one cabin, and singers and accordions are not allowed. So Katz had to teach Thorpe Lonov to sing this song before he left.

The poet later recalled: "I remember how enviously Katz put me on the plane." The plane landed safely on the frozen lake in the distant Sudem area. In the evening, I sang Bryansk Woods for the first time in a guerrilla cave. The flame of the lantern fluttered, the guerrillas were silent and listened attentively, and then began to sing softly. They asked me to sing it again and sang it for the third time. They hugged me. This is how the life of our song began.

Katz returned to Moscow and sent this song to the radio station, which was sung and played by abramov and soon spread all over the front and rear.

1966 September 17, on the anniversary of the liberation of Bryansk, a solemn monument was erected in the "Guerrilla Square" in the center of Bryansk, and the fifth paragraph of the lyrics of "Bryansk Forest is ringing" was engraved on the pedestal. And the first sentence of this song has also become the music call sign of Bryansk Radio Station.

This song won the third prize of Stalin Literature Prize on 1950 after the war.
